Heartburn? But it's not related to Heart (1,2,3)

You might be surprised to learn that heartburn has nothing to do with your heart! It's actually a common digestive issue caused by stomach acid flowing back into the food pipe. When this happens, it can lead to a burning discomfort in the upper part of your stomach or chest.

So, what exactly causes heartburn?

Well, when you swallow food, it passes through the food pipe, also known as the oesophagus, and reaches the stomach. The junction between the oesophagus and stomach is called Oesophageal Sphincter. This muscular sphincter acts as a valve that opens and closes as needed. This valve should stay closed to keep food and stomach acids within the stomach. However, if it doesn't close properly, or remains slightly open, stomach acids can sneak back into the food pipe, causing that all-too-familiar heartburn pain.

There are different factors that might weaken this valve, such as unknown causes, a hiatal hernia (where the upper part of the stomach squeezes through the diaphragm), overeating, or consuming large meals.

But what else can trigger heartburn?

Eating right before bed, consuming certain foods that increase stomach acid (like tomatoes, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, chocolate, and coffee), as well as alcohol and peppermint can all play a role. Wearing tight clothes or belts that put pressure on the stomach, dealing with stress, being pregnant (especially during the third trimester), experiencing constipation, taking certain medications like antibiotics and painkillers, and engaging in heavy exercises can also contribute to heartburn.

It's a lot to consider, isn't it? Who knew that things like posture and even smoking could impact heartburn.

Are you experiencing heartburn symptoms?

After eating or during the evening, you may experience a burning sensation in your chest, especially when leaning forward. Other symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, feeling like food is stuck in your throat, a sour taste in the back of your mouth, and regurgitation of food.

Prevention & Modifications in Habits

Making lifestyle changes can help prevent heartburn. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding oily and spicy foods, eating smaller meals, and not eating late at night can be beneficial. Additionally, elevating the head side of your bed and sleeping on your left side may help.

When to see a doctor?

It is important to seek medical attention if you frequently experience heartburn. Symptoms such as feeling choked, black stool, a hoarse voice, blood in vomit, and difficulty breathing should not be ignored. Let's prioritize our health and seek medical help when necessary.
