​Soil Transmitted Helminths are a major health concern in India, affecting millions of children. These worms can lead to nutrient deficiencies, anemia, malnutrition, and hinder growth. The GOI (1) initiated a National Deworming Day in 2015 to tackle this issue, targeting children aged 1-19.

According to W.H.O (2), these infections are caused by Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), Whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), and Hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duod​enale).​

Health risks associated with worm infestation

  1. Intestinal worms can negatively impact children's health by reducing nutrient absorption & causing nutritional deficiencies.
  2. Anemia is a common result of worm infestations, causing decrease in healthy red blood cells due to iron & protein deficiencies.
  3. Worm infections can lead to lower body weight and hindered growth in children by interfering with nutrient absorption in the small intestine.

How to prevent Worm infestation in Children?

  1. Children should wash their hands before eating, & parents should wash fruits & vegetables before eating.
  2. Use filtered water for drinking.
  3. Keep children's fingernails clean & trimmed.
  4. Encourage children to wash their hands before & after using the bathroom.
  5. Discourage unhygienic habits such as sucking fingers, biting nails, or scratching buttocks.
  6. Always cover the child's food to ensure hygiene.
