​What Is Skin Allergy?

​A person suffers from an allergy when his/ her immune system response aggressively towards certain foreign substances such as allergens and pollens. An allergic reaction that affects your skin and causes inflammation and rashes is known as the allergy of the skin. 

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms o​​f mild skin allergy are mentioned below:

  • Red spots on the skin that cause itchiness
  • Rhinitis or nasal congestion 
  • Skin rash
  • Scratchy throat
  • Watery eyes

  • Cramps or abdominal pain

​​Diagnosis

Your doctor can easily diag​​nose skin allergy based on physical examination. They might ask you about your symptoms and medical history. That is why it is advisable to keep a journal in which you can keep the detail of your symptoms. To be fully assured, your doctor may ask you to go through some of the tests: 

  • Skin Tests: In this test, a small amount of the suspected allergen will be applied to your skin and you will be kept under observation to see how your body reacts. This test can be conducted in three ways.
    • ​Patch test: In this type of skin test, the allergen is taped to your skin
    • Skin Prick Test: In this type of skin test, the allergen is applied to your skin with the help of a small prick. 
    • Intradermal Test: In this type of skin test, the allergen is injected in the first layer of the skin. 
  • Blood Tests: This test is used to diagnose skin allergy when skin testing doesn’t show any results. This test checks the antibodies in the blood towards the allergen.

Treatment

You don’t need medical attention if you have a mild symptom. In such cases, your doctor might prescribe diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which controls mild allergic reactions. Your doctor may also prescribe you an emergency medicatio​​n such as epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) as it controls severe allergic reaction. You have to keep it with yourself all the time. Epinephrine, which is also known as a rescue drug it raises blood pressure and opens the airways. 

If you see someone in your surround​ing having an allergic skin reaction, you should:

  • Lay them on the ground on their back.
  • Elevate their legs.
  • Put a blanket around them.
