What Is Bone Fracture?

A fracture is a medical term utilized for a broken bone. Fractures are common. According to a recent study, the average person has two during a lifetime. A bone fracture occurs when the physical force exerted on the bone is stronger than the bone itself. However, a fracture may also be the outcome of some medical conditions which weaken the bones, for example, osteogenesis imperfecta, osteoporosis, or some cancers.

Symptoms

The symptoms and signs of a fracture vary based on which bone is affected, the patient’s general health and age, as well as the seriousness of the injury. However, they mostly include some of the following:
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Angulation – the affected area may get bent in an unusual way
  • The patient cannot move the affected area
  • The affected joint or bone may have a grating sensation
  • The patient is unable to put weight on the fractured area
  • Discolored skin around the affected area
  • If it is an open fracture, there may be some bleeding also
When a large bone is fractured, such as the femur or pelvis:
  • The sufferer may look clammy and pale
  • Feelings of nausea and sickness.
  • There may be dizziness (feeling faint)
If possible, do not move a person with a broken bone until a healthcare expert is present and can handle the situation and, if needed, apply a splint.

Diagnosis

  • X-ray: X-ray imaging produces a picture of bones, internal tissues, and organs. Most fractures are identified by using an X-ray
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An MRI is a method that produces a more detailed image. It is generally used for stress fractures or smaller fractures.
  • Bone scan: An injection is injected that binds in the portion of the fracture where bone turnover is higher than normal.
  • Computed tomography scan (CT, or CAT scan): a three-dimensional imaging process that uses a combination of computer technology and e-rays to produce slices, vertically and horizontally, of the body.

Treatment

Specific treatment for a fracture will be analyzed by your physician according to:
  • Your overall health, age, and medical history
  • The extent of the condition
  • Your tolerance for specific therapies, medications, or procedures
  • Expectations for the course of the condition
  • Your preference or opinion
The aim of treatment is to promote healing, control the pain, prevent complications, and restore general use of the fractured area.
An open fracture (one in which the bone is visible through the skin, or a deep wound that reveals the bone through the skin) is considered an emergency. Look for immediate medical attention for this kind of fracture.

Health Insurance

Suffering from health issues is not only physically taxing but can also drain you financially. Therefore, it is advised to buy health insurance policy which will provide financial coverage that can take care of medical expenses and hospitalization bills. It takes care of pre and post hospitalization bills. If you buy health insurance, you will not only get the cashless treatment from a network hospital where the bill is directly settled by your insurance provider with the hospital but will also enjoy tax benefits under section 80D of Income Tax Act, 1961. Make sure to know your policy details and covers before purchasing a health insurance policy.
