Decode the Sting - Everything You Need to Know About Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Let's combat mosquito-borne illnesses by understanding them and taking preventive measures to protect ourselves and the community from the dangers of climate change.[1,2,3]

Dengue Fever: Dengue virus & is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito; dengue fever can cause high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, and, in extreme cases, dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Malaria: One of the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases, malaria is caused by the various variants of the Plasmodium parasite. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can lead to severe anemia, organ failure, and cerebral complications.

Zika Virus: Expecting mothers are more vulnerable to the Zika virus since it can result in congenital disabilities such as microcephaly in new-born. Common symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rash, and joint pain.

Chikungunya: This disease can cause debilitating joint pain that may persist for months or even years. Other symptoms include fever and rash.

Prevention is key! Let's revisit the steps.[3,4]

1. Use mosquito nets while sleeping, especially in high-risk areas.

2. Eliminate stagnant water sources to prevent mosquito breeding.

3. Apply repellents judiciously. Or you may use citronella, lemongrass, & rose oil mixture.

4. Minimize skin exposure by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

5. Educate neighborhoods about mosquito-borne disease risks and prevention.

6. Enforce larviciding and insecticide spraying to control mosquito breeding.

7. Seek early diagnosis and suitable medical treatment.

8. Vaccinate against diseases where available.

Let's work together to create a mosquito-free environment and decrease the likelihood of getting sick. Following these preventative measures can safeguard our health and contribute to a healthier India.
