Shedding Light on Sarcoma: Silent Cancer

Sarcoma is a r​are cancer that grows in connective tissue, such as bones, muscles, nerves, fat and blood vessels. It can occur anywhere but is more common in the arms and legs.[1,2,3] 

Exact cause of sarcoma is unknown, family history of sarcoma, previous radiation therapy, chronic swelling, and exposure to certain chemicals or viruses can increase the risk. 

What are the symptoms of sarcoma?[3,4,5]

Sarcoma usually goes undetected. Some possible signs and symptoms of sarcoma are:

1. Single or multiple painless lumps 

2. Bone or limb pain worsens at night

3. Unexpected broken bones

4. Swelling, redness, or warmth in the affected area

5. Weight loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats

6. Trouble breathing or chest pain

7. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or blood in the stool.

How is sarcoma diagnosed & treated?[1,2,3,5]

Tests such as a biopsy, blood or imaging tests are usually advised.

The treatment for sarcoma depends on many factors, such as the type, stage, location & size of the tumour, age, health and preferences. The main treatment options are:

Surgery: The commonest method is to eliminate the entire tumour and some normal tissue around it to ensure no cancer cells remain.

Radiation therapy: Involves using high-energy rays to either kill cancer cells or reduce the size of tumours.

Chemotherapy involves using drugs to kill cancer cells, prevent them from growing, or decrease the risk of recurrence.

Targeted therapy: utilizes drugs that target specific genes responsible for cancer cells' growth and survival. 

Immunotherapy: involves using drugs to stimulate the immune system into recognizing and attacking cancer cells
