How Often You Should Actually Take Your Blood Pressure?(1,2,3)

Monitoring your blood pressure is crucial for your health, especially if you have a history of hypertension or heart issues.

  • Healthy adults with no high blood pressure ​history, check your blood pressure at least once every two years during routine exams.
  • If your readings are borderline ​(120–129 systolic & under 80 diastolic), check once a year.

If you have hypertension, consider checking your Blood pressure daily or weekly, home monitoring helps you to provide a consistent picture by minimizing temporary spikes or stress from doctor visits.

How to Monitor Your Blood Pressure at Home?

  1. ​Sit calmly in a chair for at least 5 minutes without talking.
  2. Keep your feet flat on the floor & back straight.
  3. Avoid smoking, exercising, or drinking caffeine or alcohol for 30 minutes before measuring.
  4. Use a validated device & check cuff size for a good fit.
  5. Rest your left arm on a flat surface at heart level.
  6. Place the cuff above the bend of your elbow.
  7. Record all results.

Take at least 2 readings, one minute apart, in the morning before medications.

PM

Repeat in the evening before dinner.
