Your craving is temporary, but damage to your lungs is permanent!

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. About 80% of lung cancer deaths are due to smoking.

Facts:1,2

1. The amount and length of smoke affect your cancer risk.

2. But, there is no safe level of smoking; even one cigarette per day or occasional smoking increases the risk of getting lung cancer.

3. Smoking low-tar or "light" or menthol cigarettes is not intelligent and doesn't reduce the risk of causing lung cancers.4

4. Secondhand smoke, i.e. breathing in the tobacco smoke of others, can be equally dangerous.

How does smoking increase the risk of lung cancer?4,5,6

1. Like any other cells of our body, DNA is also found in our lung cells, which controls how the cells behave, protect and repair the damages.

2. Cigarette smoke releases over 5000 harmful chemicals, of which 70 can cause cancer.

3. The toxic chemicals enter our lungs, spread around the body & damage parts of DNA of lung cells, that protect us from cancer.

4. These results into building-up of DNA damage that leads to cancer over time.

Lung cancer is mostly two types:

1. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

2. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

SCLC cancers tend to be more aggressive, and smoking increases risk of both types. However, 95% of people with SCLC have a history of smoking.

There is no particular age to quit smoking. However, quitting smoking at any age can lower the risk of lung cancer.
