Uric acid is a waste product from food digestion, caused by purines. Purines are in certain foods and are processed in the body. Normally, the body eliminates uric acid through the kidneys & in urine. Excess purines or slow elimination can lead to high uric acid levels, known as hyperuricemia. This can cause Gout and make your blood and urine too acidic.

  • Men: 2.4 to 7.4 mg/dL
  • Women: 1.4 to 5.8 md/dL

What Causes a High Uric Acid Level? (1)

  • A purine-rich diet, such as liver, game meat, anchovies & sardines.
  • Excessive consumption of high fructose corn syrup.
  • Drinking too much Alcohol.
  • Certain drugs, such as Diuretics, Aspirin, & niacin (nicotinic acid).
  • Certain health conditions such as:

Leukemia

Inherited disorders of Purine metabolism.

Chronic kidney disease

Lactic acidosis (high levels of lactate in the blood)

Diabetic ketoacidosis (the blood becomes acidic due to a lack of insulin)

Preeclampsia (High blood pressure in pregnancy)

Obesity.

  • Stay hydrated.
  • Include Vitamin C in your diet.
  • Limit purine rich foods.
  • Choose low Fat dairy.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol especially beer. Alcohol can increase uric acid levels & trigger gout attacks.
  • Stay active:Engage in regular physical activity. Exercise not only helps with weight management but also improves your overall health.
