Kiss Mononucleosis GoodBye

Truth behind "Kissing disease"!

Kissing is often associated with love, but sadly, it is also associated with a disease spread by close contact between people. Thus, it's sometimes called the "Kissing disease." [1,2,3,4]

What causes 'Kissing disease' or Mono?

  • Mono is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
  • EBV is a disease that spreads through close contact, saliva, and contaminated droplets from cough or sneezing.
  • It often goes unnoticed in children but can cause symptoms in 35 to 50% of adolescent and adult cases.
What are the symptoms?
  • High grade fever (100-103° F)
  • Severe sore throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Body aches & Headaches
  • Fatigue & Muscle weakness
  • Swollen tender lymph glands.

How do you know if you've got it?

Since the symptoms are like those of a sore throat, a careful examination of the symptoms, including swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck and an enlarged liver or spleen, is followed by definitive Antibody tests- the Mono spot test.

What to do then?

  1. Since it's a viral infection, antibiotics don't work unless there is a secondary bacterial infection.
  2. Gargle with salt dissolved in warm water.
  3. You can also take medications for fever and body aches.
  4. During recovery, refrain from vigorous activities and get enough rest.
  5. Eat nutritious foods and drink plenty of fluids.
  6. Avoid any unprescribed drugs and alcohol for at least six weeks.

The best protection & prevention?

Since there is no vaccine for Epstein Barr virus, it's important to practice good personal hygiene. If you're diagnosed with Mono, it's recommended to maintain & keep distance. Don't share food, dishes, glasses or other personal items to prevent this. When you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose.
