Managing Seasonal Fevers

Due to increased exposure & susceptibility, many of us suffer from viral fevers, long-lasting post-viral coughs, breathlessness, and sneezing. The peak times are seasonal changes that occur during receding monsoons or shifts from winter to summer.[1] 

What is the cause?[1,2]

Along with many viruses, the four main types of influenza viruses are influenza A, B, C, and D, with numerous subtypes.

Recently, a subtype of the influenza A virus is the H3N2, causing most of the viral fevers.

How can one get exposed?[1]

1. Post-pandemic people have forgotten the masks, making a path for virus entry freely into the respiratory tract. 

2. In crowded places, the droplets containing viruses get released into the air through the cough or sneeze of an infected individual.

3. A contaminated hand is also a source of infection.

People at higher risk[1]

1. Pregnant women, 

2. Children & Senior Citizens

3. Individuals with chronic medical conditions 

4. Immune compromised individuals

5. Health care workers 

Symptoms to look for[1]

1. Sudden high-grade fever with chills

2. Muscles & joint pain

3. Dry cough

4. Headache & fatigue

5. Runny nose & sore throat

Down with viral fever? Dos and don'ts to abide by[1,2]


1. Adequate amount of rest & sleep.

2. Drinking plenty of liquids

3. Keeping mouth covered while sneezing or coughing

4. Use of a humidifier.

5. To get medical help if a fever lasts longer than 3 days

6. Cold sponging or tepid water sponging.


1. Avoid the use of antibiotics arbitrarily

2. Avoid drinking alcohol & smoking

3. Avoid strenuous exercises

4. Do not starve yourself.

Even though a cough occasionally last longer, this self-limiting illness typically leads to recovery within a week of the first sign of symptoms. And, whenever necessary, seek medical advice.
