Is Covid-19 Airborne? Here's How To Stay Safe

The world right now is facing a catastrophic pandemic that once happened in 1918 as a Spanish flu is now happening in 2020 as a novel Coronavirus. Almost in every country, one can find the case of COVID-19. Scientists are trying their best to find a vaccine or medicine that can treat people suffering from coronavirus. Regarding this, there have been many kinds of research, trials, and whatnot. In recent research, it has been proven that the virus that is causing COVID-19 pandemic can spread via microscopic respiratory droplets in enclosed indoor spaces. Scientists have found out in their research that not only via coughing or sneezing, an infected person can expel pieces of the virus in the atmosphere, but it can also be spread when an infected person talks or exhales. This condition of airborne transfer can be seen more commonly in indoor spaces then outdoor, as aerosol evaporates quicker outdoor than indoor.

However, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the leading organization that looks after the health of the people from around the globe, have not made any changes in their guidelines regarding novel coronavirus. Earlier, in April, WHO in its guidelines mentioned that only health workers, doctors, and infected persons must wear a face mask. But they were wrong as it was later proven that wearing a face mask can reduce the spread of COVID-19. Not only the Indian government but several other superpowers went against WHO’s guidelines and made wearing face mask compulsory in public. WHO later changed its guidelines and suggested that people should wear a face mask.

Similarly, in this case, WHO haven’t updated their guidelines against coronavirus and how it is an airborne disease when it comes to closed spaces. Regarding this, more than 230 scientists from 32 countries have written a letter to the World Health Organisation to update their guidelines and make people aware that COVID-19 is an airborne disease in indoor spaces. As of now, there has been no change in the guidelines of WHO. According to the guidelines, COVID-19 spreads when an infected person encounters another person. This is true, but there is enough evidence that shows that coronavirus can remain in the air for hours.

Scientists from across the world want WHO to update their guidelines as this will make people more aware and they can take safety measures like stop overcrowding indoor spaces and have a proper air ventilation system in buildings. This will reduce the risk of airborne transmission and many people can save their life. Until WHO acknowledged it, here is how you can protect yourself from the airborne spread:

  • Regular handwash, wearing a face mask, and keeping distance from people are some of the basic things that you should do to protect yourself from COVID-19.
  • You should insure yourself with health insurance.
  • The risk of airborne transmission is high in indoor spaces, that is why you should wear face mask indoor also.
  • You should avoid crowded places.

  • You should follow the tips mentioned above to keep yourself protected from COVID-19. You can also buy coronavirus health insurance to get financial security in the time of need.
