Reliance Critical Illness Insurance is a health plan that offers specialised coverage for managing treatment costs for critical illnesses like stroke, kidney failure, cancer, etc. It covers 10 critical illnesses*, with a lump sum payout ranging from ₹5 lakhs to ₹10 lakhs.
For example, if your family has a history of heart disease and you're at risk of developing it later in life, a critical illness policy will pay the full sum insured amount upon a diagnosis from your doctor for heart disease or surgery. So, if you bought a ₹10 lakh critical illness policy, you will get the full ₹10 lakh on diagnosis. You can use this amount to pay for surgery costs, cardiac medication, follow-up visits to the hospital and any other costs.
The Reliance Critical Illness Insurance plan offers coverage to a single person with flexible policy durations of 1 and 3 years*. With the Reliance Self-i app, you get a streamlined claims process, meaning you get the lump sum payout right when you need it.

Things to Check When Filing a Claim
Here are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure a quick and easy claim settlement process. Knowing these policy clauses can help ensure you get the full claim amount on time upon diagnosis of a critical illness.
Policy Period
This is the timeframe the policy will be active for. For example, our critical illness insurance plan is available for 1 and 3 years*, meaning your policy coverage can last up to 3 years (based on your chosen tenure) after which, you must renew your policy. You will also only be able to file claims during the policy period, not before or after it.
Policy Type
Who this policy covers is also an important factor to check for. Our critical illness insurance plan is an individual policy, meaning it will only cover one person. So, if you're listed as the policyholder under the policy, it will only cover your medical costs when filing a claim.
Check the Waiting and Survival Periods
- 90 days initial waiting period.
- 30-day survival period for illnesses covered under Category 1.
- 60-day survival period for illnesses covered under category 2.
Know Your Responsibility As the Policyholder
- Pay the policy premiums on time.
- Avoid filing a false claim.
- Declare your medical history honestly.
Maintain Continuity
It's important to renew your policy on time, because if you lose coverage you will no longer be covered for your healthcare costs. So,
renew health policy within 30 days of the policy end date to enjoy continued coverage.
Know the Deductibles
Understand the applicable co-pay and deductible amount. If applicable, you will have to pay it before your claim is settled. Simply put, the deductible amount needs to be fully paid by you before we start covering any of your medical costs.
Co-pay in health insurance is the amount you need to pay on every claim before we cover the rest of the medical cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a better option - A health insurance critical illness add-on or a standalone policy?
A health insurance plan provides comprehensive coverage for a broad spectrum of medical expenses, whereas a critical illness insurance plan offers specialised coverage for specific life-altering diseases. You can combine the critical illness add-on to your base policy for a slightly higher premium.
When choosing between these two, you need to assess your risk of being diagnosed with a critical illness and your age. This will help you determine the level of coverage you need, which is limited to the one available under an add-on or a standalone policy.
In some cases, having both a health insurance plan and a critical illness plan is a good investment. This is because, while you receive financial assistance for all medical expenses under a health insurance plan, you also have a financial safety net that offers a lump sum payment for critical illnesses.
Why would I need support for lost income from critical illness insurance?
When you are diagnosed with a critical illness, your ability to work and earn your monthly income reduces significantly. In such situations, you and your family members might have limited or no financial resources to cover daily expenses. Thus, when you buy a critical illness insurance policy, you get financial compensation from us via a lump sum payout to support your family's needs and cover the lost income.
What is the difference between a waiting period and a survival period?
The
waiting period in health insurance is the time during which you cannot file claims or get coverage for specific treatments or illnesses under your policy. For example, the Reliance critical illness policy has an initial 90-day waiting period, meaning you can only file claims 90 days after your policy start date.
A survival period is the time the policyholder must survive after being diagnosed with a critical illness before the insurance company pays the sum insured amount. For example, the Reliance critical illness policy has a 30-day survival period for bone marrow transplants. So, you will only receive the insurance payout after surviving 30 days from the date of diagnosis.
Which diseases fall under the 30-day and 60-day survival period categories?
List of diseases under Category 1 (30-day survival period) -
- Cancer of specified severity
- Major Organ/ Bone Marrow Transplant
- Multiple Sclerosis with Persisting Symptoms
- Third Degree Burns
- Aorta Graft Surgery
List of diseases under Category 2 (60-day survival period) -
- Open Heart Replacement or Repair of Heart Valves
- Coma of Specified Severity
- Quadriplegia (Permanent Paralysis of all four limbs)
- Total Blindness
- Kidney Failure Requiring Regular Dialysis
Is a medical test mandatory for everyone? Where can the tests be conducted?
A medical test is mandatory only for Individuals above 45 years. The medical tests will be done at a designated diagnostic centre and will be as follows:
- Complete Blood Count
- Fasting Blood Sugar
- ESR
- Serum Creatinine
- SGPT
- Urine Routine
- ECG
- Medical Examination Report with BP recordings - By a physician
Based on your medical history, you may be requested to undergo other tests. We will also reimburse 50% of the cost of these medical tests conducted at the company's designated centre.
How do I determine the amount of critical illness coverage I need?
To choose how much critical illness coverage you need, you must assess the following factors thoroughly -
- Your lifestyle habits. E.g., leading a high-stress lifestyle or excessive drinking and smoking may put you at risk of developing critical illnesses or chronic health conditions later in life.
- Understanding your income and debts, as well as your financial state, will help you choose the right sum insured for coverage.
- Your family medical history; as it increases your chances of developing certain diseases. Based on this, you may require a higher coverage requirement.
Can the nominee be changed in the mid-term of the policy?
You can change the nominee for your critical illness policy at any time during the policy term. To change the nominee, all you need to do is give the details of your changed nominee to the company. To do so, please contact
customer support.
Can the Sum Insured be changed mid-term?
No, the sum insured cannot be changed in the middle of the policy tenure.
What are the factors that can affect your premium?
Your critical illness insurance premium is calculated based on your age, medical history and sum insured amount.
There is also a direct correlation between the sum insured and premiums. Depending on the sum insured you choose, your premium can vary.
A higher sum insured leads to a higher premium, but it also means a higher payout. Hence, for more severe critical illnesses, we recommend opting for a higher SI.
What happens to the premium if no claims are made against the policy?
If you have not made any claims against your policy during the year, Reliance General Insurance offers you the following discounts:
- 5% discount for one claim-free year*
- 10% cumulative discount for every claim-free year*
- Up to 50% discount for a break-free 3-year policy term*
Note: These discounts are subject to maximum limits. Please ensure you check your
policy terms and conditions before purchase
Is there a limit on the number of claims that one can make in a policy period?
Yes, only a one-time lump sum settlement is available under this policy.
What are some reasons for claim rejections?
Some of the common reasons for claim rejections include -
- Pre-existing critical illness claim request
- Incomplete or inaccurate supporting documents for the claim
- Incorrect information on the claim form
- Limited proof of illness diagnosis, etc.
