Honda Motor Company of Japan and the Hero Group of India came together in 1984 to form Hero Honda Motors Limited (HHML). Together, they grew exponentially and dominated the Indian motorcycle market for several years.
In 2011, the two giants parted ways and set out to serve the Indian masses on their own. Thus, the Indian operations were now under the Hero Group, as Hero MotoCorp and Honda started doing business as Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI).
HMSI has been more successful in the scooter segment as the motorcycle segment was still ruled by Hero MotoCorp and they were not looking forward to expanding its scooter business anytime soon.
