Understanding Arrhythmia

Understanding Arrhythmia (1,2)

Our hearts are controlled by electrical impulses that tell it when to beat. When these signals malfunction, it can result in arrhythmias, which are abnormalities in the heart's rhythm that can cause it to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly.

Among the most common are:

  • Atrial fibrillation:Irregular, & often fast, heart rhythm.
  • Supraventricular tachycardia:Episodes of very fast heart rate when resting.
  • Bradycardia:A slower heartbeat than normal.
  • Ventricular fibrillation:Fast, life-threatening heart rhythm that can result in the heart stopping beating & requires immediate medical attention.

What are the symptoms & when should I see a medical professional?

  • Palpitations, such as fluttering or thumping heartbeats, are often a sign of arrhythmias.
  • Experiencing palpitations does not always indicate a heart rhythm issue. Additional symptoms may include fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

Common causes of Arrhythmias

Millions of people worldwide are affected by arrhythmias, which are becoming increasingly common due to the aging population and growing risk factors. Common causes and triggers of arrhythmias include underlying health conditions.

  • Weakened heart muscle
  • Blockage in the arteries that supply blood to the heart
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea

Preventing Arrhythmias

Being proactive about your heart health can help prevent and manage arrhythmias. Making certain lifestyle choices may reduce your risk of developing arrhythmias.

  • Eating a heart healthy diet.
  • Getting regular exercise & maintaining a healthy weight
  • Limit caffeine
  • Stop smoking & Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Practicing stress reduction techniques such as: Yoga, Meditation, Acupuncture, Massage & Journaling.
