Awareness Begins at Home: Guide to your Child’s Hearing Journey

Awareness Begins at Home: Guide to your Child’s Hearing Journey (1,2,3)

Children respond differently as they grow, but if they don’t react to sounds or their language skills lag, hearing issues might be a concern.

Here are some key milestones to guide you:

Birth to 3 months

Infants may startle at loud noises and respond to voices, with varied cries for different needs.

4 to 6 months

Babies often babble, seek sound sources, & engage with music.

7 to 12 months

By now, they locate sounds, recognize their name, and can follow simple commands.

12 to 24 months

Expect vocabulary growth, simple phrases, & increased interaction during storytelling.

2 to 3 years

Children start forming longer sentences, answering questions, and grasping basic concepts like up and down.

Spotting Red flags

If the child does not react to loud sounds, shows no response to familiar voices, lacks sound direction response, does not babble, & fails to respond to their name or imitate sounds and gestures.

Who are at risk?

  • Children who were born prematurely & required care in the NICU.
  • Individuals have had health problems like recurring ear infections and infections that could potentially affect their hearing, like meningitis or cytomegalovirus.

How to prevent hearing loss in children?

  • Keep device volumes low but still ensure clear audio.
  • Limit exposure to loud environments of over 85 decibels.
  • Use ear protection.
  • Consider headphones with volume limits.
