What Is Ulcer?

An ulcer is a physical rupture in the membrane of the body which affects the functioning of the organ. This disease occurs in the mucous or the epithelium membrane that is present on the skin surface. This disease may affect different parts of the body like the small intestine, stomach, mouth, or esophagus.

Symptoms

One of the most common symptoms that patients suffering from ulcers will feel is a pain or burning sensation in the middle of their abdomen section, i.e., between the chest and belly button. If you are suffering from an ulcer, you will feel more pain, if you haven't had any food. Other signs and symptoms are mentioned below:

  • Pain in the stomach
  • Vomiting, nausea
  • Loss in weight
  • Blood in vomit
  • Don't want to eat because of pain
  • Shortness of breath, tiredness, or paler skin
  • Bloating
  • Acidic burping
  • Heartburn, a sense of burning in the chest
  • Tarry, dark stools

Any of the symptoms mentioned above can lead to serious consequences, so it is better to consult the doctor immediately in case you are facing any of the symptoms.

Diagnosis

If you feel any of the symptoms, it's better to get yourself checked by a reputable doctor. To diagnose you properly, your doctor might ask you about the time span of the symptoms and will review your medical history (if any).

However, your doctor may ask you to go through some tests like blood, breath, or stool. This is done to see whether or not there is an H. pylori infection. In the breath test, you have to drink a clear liquid and then breathe into a sealed bad. If H. pylori are present, the sample will have more than normal carbon dioxide. Other tests are:

  • Barium Swallow: In this test, you have to drink a thick white liquid, which will coat your upper gastrointestinal tract, and when X-rays are lighted upon your body, your doctor can easily see your small intestine and stomach.
  • Endoscopic biopsy: In this test, a piece of stomach tissue is removed to analyze it in a lab.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type of ulcer patients have. In severe cases, patients might need to get surgery. If you are suffering from severe cases of ulcers, your doctor might ask you to get hospitalized. You may also need a blood transfusion. Given below are some of the nonsurgical treatment that cures ulcer:

  • If the cause of ulcer is H. pylori, then your doctor will prescribe you drugs like PPIs or proton pump inhibitors that block the production of acid in the stomach
  • You can also have H2 receptor blockers that block the production of acid
  • Probiotics
  • Bismuth supplement
