What is Mumps?

Mumps is an infectious disease caused by a virus that transfers from an individual to another through close personal contact, saliva, and nasal secretions

The condition majorly affects the salivary gland, also known as parotid glands. These glands produce saliva. There are three different salivary glands on every side of your face, located below and behind your ears.

Symptoms

People who get infected with the mumps virus have either no symptoms or signs or very mild ones. When symptoms and signs do occur, they generally appear about three or two weeks after exposure to the virus.

The primary sign of mumps is swollen salivary glands that puff out your cheeks. Other symptoms and signs may include:

  • Pain in the swollen salivary glands on both or one side of your face
  • Pain while swallowing or chewing
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of appetite
So, these were some symptoms of mumps.

Diagnosis

If you or your child has symptoms or signs of mumps, the doctor is likely to:

  • Ask whether you or your child might have been exposed to the virus and whether you have been vaccinated against mumps.
  • Suggest a blood test to analyze whether you have mumps virus or not.

Treatment

Because mumps is a virus, it does not respond to other medications or antibiotics. However, you can cure the symptoms to make yourself more comfortable while you are sick. These include:

  • Rest when you feel tired or weak.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to bring down your fever.
  • Calm swollen glands by using ice packs.
  • Drink a lot of fluids to ignore dehydration due to fever.
  • Eat a soft diet of yogurt, soup, and other foods that are not hard to chew.
Avoid acidic beverages and food that may cause more pain in your salivary glands.

You can generally return to school or work about one week after a doctor analyzes your mumps if you feel up to it. By the point, you are no longer infectious. Mumps generally runs its course in a couple of weeks. Ten days after your illness, you should be feeling really better.

The majority of people who get mumps cannot contract the disease a second time. Having the virus once protects you from getting infected.
