Why Do You Need Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance becomes important when you consider the many possibilities of loss during a trip. There’s a possibility of getting seriously sick or badly injuring yourself. There’s also a chance of losing your checked in baggage or it getting delayed by the airline. There’s even the possibility of a natural disaster affecting your holiday destination making it unable for you to enjoy your holiday.
So given the risk of loss during a trip, the need for an international travel insurance cannot be overstated. We’ve listed a few scenarios below when an international travel insurance like ours will come through for you.
Cover for Medical Emergencies
An accident, a fall or a sudden illness could land you in the hospital. Having an international travel insurance will cover the medical expenses during emergencies like this. You’re covered even if you’re someone who suffers from a pre-existing disease like diabetes under medication or blood pressure provided that the pre-existing disease results in a life-threatening condition that needs immediate treatment. You’ll get the additional benefit of emergency dental treatment in case you’re teeth are affected by some mishap.
Protects from Baggage Loss and Delays
If your baggage is lost by the airline, you can get reimbursed for the value you lost by having an international travel insurance. No partial loss or damage shall become payable. Also, the cost of necessary emergency purchases of toiletries, medication and clothing shall be reimbursed in the event of any delays caused by the airline in transporting your checked in baggage for more than 12 hours from the actual arrival time of the common carrier at the destination
Relief from Trip Cancellations
In case your trip is cancelled due to an unforeseen illness or death of a family member or any of the insured persons, then an international travel insurance will reimburse you for the forfeited, non-refundable prepaid payments for travel and accommodation made prior to the insured person(s) departure date.
Loss of Passport Cover
If you lose your passport during your trip due to theft you will be reimbursed for all expenses related to issuing a fresh or duplicate passport. Make sure you report the theft to the police within 24 hours to avail of this cover.
Protects from Trip Delays
In case your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours due to unforeseen circumstances such as Inclement weather conditions causing delay or a loss of passport or travel documents or unforeseen illness, injury of immediate Family Member, then the policy will reimburse you for any reasonable additional expenses incurred. The reimbursement under this benefit will not exceed the Sum Insured as specified in the Schedule.
Factors that Affect Your Travel Insurance Premiums
Your international travel insurance premium is influenced by a combination of factors like the country your travelling to, your age, and the duration of your trip. Check out the list below to know in detail how each factor affects your premiums:
Your Travel Destination
The country you decide to fly to affects your international travel insurance since each country carries its own risk, which the insurer assesses. Therefore, your premium will go higher if you’re travelling across USA and Canada in comparison to travelling to Asian destinations.
Length of Your Stay
Your international travel insurance premium is affected by how long your trip lasts. A shorter trip results in lower premiums because the chances of risk is lower and the opposite applies for longer trips where the risk is higher. If you spend more time in your holiday destination, there is a higher risk of injury or illness since you’ll be out travelling to enjoy your holiday.
Age
The age of all travelling members plays a role in the premiums too. Older people are associated with higher risk, therefore the premiums for them would be higher. Older people have a higher medical risk and a high probability of having pre-existing diseases, which can lead to hospitalisation. On the other hand, younger travellers will have lower premiums as they are usually fitter and have a low medical risk.
Type of Insurance Plan
There are several travel plans that can cover different needs. If you’re a student going abroad for education, then there’s a Student Travel Plan. If you’re in a business and make multiple trips in a year, then there’s the Annual Multi-trip Plan. Depending on your need and the type of insurance plan for that need, the premium changes accordingly.
Sum Insured
Every travel insurance policy has different plans that offer varying amounts of the Sum Insured. The Sum Insured is the maximum value that an insurance company will pay towards your claim. The claim could be related to medical expenses or checked in baggage related losses. So when the Sum Insured is high, the premium will be higher.
Documents Required to File a Claim
1. KYC Process shall be completed as per the AML/CFT Guidelines issued by IRDAI. PAN/Form 60 along with other documents mentioned below is necessary.
2. The original ticket/boarding pass and a copy of the passport indicating the travel dates must be submitted with every claim, along with the completed claim form.
3. Original bills/vouchers/reports and discharge summary must be submitted along with all claims.
4. For reimbursement of the costs of transporting the mortal remains of the Insured/Insured Person to the Republic of India or of costs of burial abroad, an official death certificate and a physician's statement giving the cause of death needs to be submitted.
5. For loss of passport, a Police Report obtained within 24 hours of the Insured/Insured person becoming aware of the theft. Along with this, original bills / receipts of expenses incurred for new / fresh passport needs to be submitted.
6. In case of total loss of checked-in baggage, a Property Irregularity Report or other report usually issued by the common carriers in the event of loss of checked-in baggage. A letter from the airline will also need to be submitted stating the compensation, if any received from them for the lost baggage.
7. For personal liability, proof of judicial decision rendered by a Court needs to submitted.
8. For claims under financial emergency assistance benefit, the police report filed within 24 hours of becoming aware of the robbery needs to be submitted.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Buying Travel Insurance Online
Coverage
Check if the travel policy covers emergency medical expenses, trip cancellations, trip delays, loss of passport, delay of checked in baggage and total loss of checked in baggage, offers transportation of mortal remains in case of death, etc. A comprehensive coverage is recommended when buying an international travel insurance online. For example, if you face a situation on a family trip where the airline has misplaced your checked in luggage, then having a family plan from Reliance General Insurance will help you get reimbursed for the lost baggage.
Medical and Dental Covers
There’s a whole range of medical benefits that ought to be covered in an international travel insurance plan. You could get admitted in the hospital due to some accident or sudden illness and the travel plan should cover you for the hospitalisation expenses. Even if you need emergency dental treatment while on your trip then an international travel insurance should reimburse you for that. Make sure you get a plan that covers you for all of the previously mentioned scenarios (check out the Reliance Travel Care Policy for all these covers
Sum Insured
Every travel plan has a Sum Insured which is the maximum amount that an insurance company will pay toward a claim. So the higher the Sum Insured the better protection you get financially from hospitalisation or losses. Our Travel Care Policy Plans, Annual Multi-trip Plans, Student Plans all offer a Sum Insured of up to $500,000 which is adequate coverage for different scenarios.
Claim Settlement Process
The travel insurer’s claim settlement ratio and process should be the foremost point of consideration before buying an international travel insurance policy. A higher settlement ratio and a smoother procedure will ensure your claim is successfully processed.
