Indore is the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Indore is the first city in India to have campuses of the Indian Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Technology. The city was ruled by the Marathas for a long time, under the Holkar dynasty. Under the British, the ruler of Indore state was accorded a 19 Gun salute, a rare honor. Indore is a fast growing city, surrounded and serviced by an industrial cluster consisting of the industrial town of Pithampur, Indore Special Economic Zone, Sanwer industrial belt, IT parks, Electronic complex and more.
The state government has allocated a decent amount of funds over the years to develop Indore's transport system. State Highway 27 connects Ujjain to Indore. National Highway 47 which connects Ahmedabad to Nagpur, passes through Indore. National Highway 52, connecting Punjab and Karnataka, also passes through Indore.
The Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation connects all major towns and cities in Madhya Pradesh. An MRTS system has also been proposed for Indore city and when it becomes operational, it will be the first system in India to run driverless trains.
