5 precautionary measures to take with CNG Cars

Going Green is the need of the hour! The ever-increasing pollution and global warming have led to the deterioration of the standard of air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Although it's not a one person's job. You can start at your end by choosing the eco-friendly versions of the thing available in the market. To the ones who already have adapted to a greener life, we would like to congratulate you for the same.

We all know that small changes can make a significant shift in society. The latest green adaption is choosing CNG and electric vehicles over conventional ones. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has become one of the most preferred automobile fuels in India. Thanks to the numerous benefits it offers like- cost efficiency, clean environment, and high calorific value. Also, these vehicles provide far superior mileage than their petrol and diesel counterparts.

That said, CNG vehicles have their own set of drawbacks. CNG is highly combustible when compared to petrol or diesel. It takes just a single spark to put the car on fire. Therefore, to ensure that you are driving safely in your CNG-powered vehicle, you need to take a few precautions. Listed below are five precautionary measures that one should take with CNG cars-

Avoid the Usage of Unauthorized CNG Kits

Some car owners try to fit a CNG kit in their petrol or diesel cars , which is not the right practice. Also, to save money, they prefer getting it done from roadside dealers and mechanics, which generally ruins the mechanics of their car. Below par quality kits and unsuitable fitting can cause leakage, resulting in a fire. Therefore, it is advised not to install CNG kit/ cylinder in your vehicle from any un-authorized roadside workshop/ outlet.

Follow the Rules

The vehicles functioning on CNG should meet the terms as contained in the central motor vehicles rules. Activities like smoking in the car, firing crackers near the car, carrying flammable materials, and prolonged use of heater can prove to be dangerous. The ignition temperature of CNG is 540 degree Celsius, which a car can quickly each while on the go. Therefore play by the books and safe.

Don't Use Substandard/Mismatch Accessories

Using the right set of kit and cylinder that goes well with the make of your car is imperative. Failing to do so can be fatal. If you want to be safe on the roads, you should only use approved brands and new CNG cylinders manufactured as per relevant standard. Aftermarket accessories are prone to damage and fire as their voltage and current ratings may not match with those of original fixtures and wiring of the car.

Thorough Leak Test of the Gas System

Avoid overfilling the fuel tank or having an improper fitting or gradual leakage in your fuel tank as it can be dangerous. This situation can lead to a fire outbreak and bursting of the fuel tank. The best solution to leakage is to detect it and immediately to get it fixed from an authorized service center.

Regular Maintenance

Ensure your vehicle under-goes pre-conversion checks thoroughly. It is one of the prime causes of fire in CNG cars. Get your vehicle checked at regular intervals. Old wires usually lose their insulation, which leads to a short circuit. Also, the pre-installed CNG kit should be tested from time to time.

Apart from keeping these tips in mind, don't forget to insure your vehicle with a comprehensive car insurance policy. Having a valid car insurance policy is a must! It not only offers complete protection to your car but also give you optimum peace of mind.
