Ahmedabad is famous for its textile industry, kite museum, and Sabarmati Ashram. At one time, Ahmedabad was the capital city of Gujarat before the state secretariat shifted to Gandhinagar, which is also nearby. The city is one of the fastest growing Indian cities and it is already the fifth most populous city in the country.

The city has a strong transport infrastructure, with a more than decent road network. The city's rapid bus transportation system is considered a model for other Indian states. All the buses on this network are equipped with an e-ticketing system and passenger information system. Ahmedabad will soon be connected to the capital Gandhinagar, through an MRTS system. Besides this, the city also has a large fleet of private vehicles, including taxis and rickshaws.

State Highway 1 connects Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar and Rajkot. State Highway 7 connects Ahmedabad to Kutch, Surendranagar, and Patan. State Highway 41 connects Ahmedabad to Mehsana, Patan, and Banaskantha. National Highway 8 connects Ahmedabad to Vapi and onwards to Mumbai. National Highway 8A connects Ahmedabad to Narayan Sarovar.
