What is Student Travel Insurance?

Student travel insurance is a type of travel insurance plan that is made for students who are moving abroad to pursue their higher education. By buying this policy, you get covered for various risks like loss of passport, loss of checked-in baggage, study interruptions, medical emergencies and more.

Whether you're looking to pursue your higher education in foreign lands like the US, UK, Australia, Europe or anywhere else in the world, having travel insurance for students makes studying abroad that much safer.

Benefits of Buying Student Travel Insurance

A whole world of potential awaits you as you’re looking to begin your education at a foreign university. As you’re preparing, you have several things to arrange for like funds, accommodation, flights, etc. But you shouldn’t forget to take a international student travel insurance along for the ride. Here’s a list of benefits of buying overseas student travel insurance:

1. Passport loss cover

Losing a passport as a student studying abroad is a situation you don't want to find yourself in. It's the sole document that states you're an Indian citizen and it contains your visa too. However, if you do lose your passport, an international student travel insurance policy will cover the expenses related to getting a duplicate or fresh passport. Having student travel insurance will ease your financial burden of replacing a lost passport thus reducing your burden during a stressful time.

2. Baggage loss cover

You're going to a new country for the first time to study and improve your chances of having a successful career. All you have are the few belongings you bring from home. However, the worst happens and the airline loses your baggage. Getting back your belongings would be hard but with international student travel insurance you can get reimbursed for the losses incurred. Additionally, you're also covered for losses incurred if the flight delays your baggage too.

3. Study interruption cover

Everything is set for you to begin your fresh educational pursuit. Nothing can put a stop to your studies. But not everything is in your control. A sudden illness or injury that lands you in the hospital or the death of an immediate family member could curtail your studies. This could mean months out of college and you lose out on the semester. But with student travel insurance, you get covered for study interruptions where your fees for the semester you missed out on will be reimbursed.

4. Medical expenses cover

An injury or accident is ever only a step away. Though no one wishes it upon you, it could still ambush you as you pursue your studies overseas. If this happens to you, you're in danger of not only a potential fatality but also racking up huge medical bills. But international student travel insurance can rescue you from the travails of hospitalisation with its medical coverage. It'll pay for your transportation to the hospital, inpatient treatment, diagnostic tests, X-rays, plaster casts, bandages, etc. In case of a death, it will cover the cost of bringing back the body to India or providing a local burial.

5. Compassionate visit cover

Have you ever fallen sick so bad that you're lying in a hospital bed for several days straight? The thing that amplifies the pain during that time is not having a loved one by your side. Now imagine something like this happening while you're studying abroad. There's no family member to offer you any kind of support. But if you have student travel insurance, you not only get medical coverage but you can also have one family member brought to you through the Compassionate Visit cover. This takes care of the flight tickets and accommodation for that one family member.

6. Sponsor loss cover

Because life is unpredictable, unfortunate events can befall even your loved ones. If such an event happens to your family you could lose your means of paying college fees and thus interrupt your studies. However, with travel insurance for students, you can get the tuition fees that are due for the remaining time at your college reimbursed. This will at least provide a little relief from the difficult time your family will be facing at the time.

7. Bail bond cover

Familiarising yourself with the laws of a foreign country could be a lot if you just got there. But you could end up in jail if you break a rule you were unaware of. You could also land in jail if you damage property or hurt someone by accident. It hurts to imagine such a situation, right? But here's where travel insurance for students will help you. If you face bailable offences, then the bail is covered under the student travel policy. This makes it useful to get you out of tough spots with the authorities.

8. Takes care of Personal Liability

Personal liability refers to the money you owe someone for the damages you cause to their property or health/life. This is usually a huge amount of money and can easily drain your savings. Here travel insurance for international students comes in handy since it covers all your liability owed to a third-party.

9. Personal Accident cover

If during your studies abroad you get into an accident that gravely injures you resulting in either a disability or death, a student travel insurance plan will compensate you for the disability or in case of death, compensation will go to the legal heir.
