In 2009 IRDAI introduced the Insurance Information Bureau. The policy number could be extracted simply from their website
Step 1: Visit IIB's official website
Step 2: Enter all the necessary details like vehicle number, address, email id, vehicle registration number, date of the accident, place of accident.
Step 3: enter the security code and once this is done you will get all the details of your policy.
Guidelines to Check the Policy Number
The car insurance policy must be 2 months old; only then will it be visible in IIB's site.
A maximum of three attempts is available on a given phone number or email id to search for the policy number.
Information is available for policies that started after 1st April 2010.
Online Insurer
Your insurer must be having their website online and the details for the policy will be available on their portal as well. Some basic details like the registration number of the car, name and other important things will be needed.
