Reliance General Survey Flags Rise in India's Cardiac Procedures

Published By: Mint

Published Date: 29-09-2023

A recent survey by Reliance General Insurance for World Heart Day reveals a concerning trend in India's cardiac health. The study examined Coronary Angiography (CAG) procedures performed between 2018 and 2023, focusing on younger age groups.

The findings show a dramatic increase in CAG procedures following the COVID-19 pandemic. For those aged 19-35, procedures increased by 160.87% from 2018-2019 to 2022-2023. A similar increase of 102.99% was seen in the age group of 36-45 years old over the same time period.

The survey also highlighted a significant gender disparity. Males were more likely to undergo CAG procedures in both age groups. In the 19-35 bracket, males accounted for 78.33% of procedures in 2022-2023, up from 73.91% in 2018-2019. For the 36-45 group, male representation rose from 67.16% to 81.62%.

These findings align with the WHO's report ""Invisible Numbers,"" which identifies cardiovascular diseases as the leading global cause of death, responsible for about 17.9 million deaths (68.1% of total deaths). The WHO notes that 86% of these deaths could have been prevented or delayed through risk management and treatment.

The rising trend of coronary artery disease among younger, productive Indians has significant implications for the country's socioeconomic development. The World Health Organisation (WHO) study and the RGI poll both highlight the significance of making healthy lifestyle choices, like engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, giving up smoking and maintaining stress management.

The reports call for increased awareness, preventive measures and coordinated efforts from government, healthcare providers, civil society and the private sector to address this growing public health challenge.
