Comprehensive Guide to Diabetes Health Insurance in India

Published By: Business Standard

Published Date: 12-11-2024

Diabetes is a dominant health condition among Indians, with over 100 million diagnosed and living with the condition, as reported by ICMR. Since the number of pre-diabetic patients has also increased significantly, it is essential to have health insurance covering treatment costs.

A robust health insurance plan covers the costs of diabetes-related treatments and offers financial protection against complications arising from diabetes. It helps Indian families manage and plan their finances better, reducing their financial worries.

Health insurance plans today offer specialised coverage for diabetes-related expenses with low waiting periods. While standard policies may impose a waiting period of up to 3 years, several specialised plans allow you to reduce the waiting periods. For those with pre-existing conditions, you can reduce the waiting period by paying an extra 20% premium.

During the discussion about coverage options, Reliance General Insurance’s CEO, Rakesh Jain, highlighted broad coverage for several complications arising from diabetes. He further stated that you could get broad coverage for diabetic complications, such as Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Nephropathy/Neuropathy, after the waiting period is served.

When selecting a health insurance policy, diabetic individuals should consider plans with immediate coverage or minimal waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. It is advisable to opt for policies that provide cashless treatment at network hospitals for quick claim settlement.

Since diabetes cases in India are increasing, it is essential to choose health insurance plans that cover treatment costs and ongoing disease management. Comprehensive coverage, manageable premium prices and the inclusion of critical illness add-ons can enhance financial protection against diabetes-related complications.
