In response to escalating air pollution in Delhi, health insurance premiums for residents may rise by 10–15% in 2025. This potential increase follows a surge in pollution-related health claims, particularly for respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. If approved by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), this would be the first instance in India where air pollution directly influences health insurance pricing. Such a move aims to address the financial strain caused by pollution-induced health issues, which can lead to chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and heart disease.
The proposed premium hike could set a precedent for other cities grappling with similar environmental challenges. This development underscores the importance of comprehensive health coverage that includes protection against pollution-related ailments. Policyholders are encouraged to review their health insurance plans to ensure adequate coverage in light of these changes.
