World Health Day which is celebrated every year across the globe on 9th April. World Health Day is also considered as the birthday of the World Health Organisation, as WHO was started on 9th April 1948. Every year the globe celebrates World Health Day by appreciating our health workers like doctors, nurses, midwives, and hospital staff. And their contribution to making the world a better and healthier place for people. The value of health workers has increased drastically in the last few months. As we all know that the world is suffering from a global pandemic, coronavirus. This pandemic has brought the world to its feet. Everyday thousands of people are getting infected from the virus. That’s why getting insured with health insurance is necessary. We all are indeed suffering the consequences of this disease. But our health workers are working on the frontline and are daily curing thousands of people and are coming in contact with several infected people. They are selflessly giving their time and are helping people infected from COVID-19. So, that’s why this year’s World Health Day was very important. The Director-General of the World Health Organisation on the occasion of World Health Day highlighted the following points on the importance of nurses and midwives in our life:

  • He first starts by saying, not only on this day but the world should appreciate our nurses and midwives every day
  • He then said how due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the world is known to understand the vital role of nurses and midwives. According to the Director-General, these nurses and midwives put themselves at risk to alleviate suffering and save lives.
  • These nurses and midwives are taking full care of bringing new-born babies safely into the world.
  • These nurses are learning how to deal with patients infected from COVID-19. This saves time for the doctors and their workload gets divided.
  • Due to this pandemic, nurses and midwives have not gone to their homes. As they want to keep their family protected.
  • He then said, due to this pandemic, more than 3,000 health workers have been infected, and many have lost their lives.
  • He then focussed on the protection of the health workers and how important is it to provide them with proper safety equipment.
  • At last, he added that there are fewer nurses and midwives around the world. He shared the report with the world, Nursing Now, and the International Council of Nurses on the State of the World’s Nursing. In this report, the WHO is talking about the condition of nurses across the world.
  • The report suggests that 80 percent of the world’s nurses work in countries making up just half of the world’s population.
  • That reports say that the number of nurses globally is increasing, but it's still not enough, especially in South East Asia, Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, and some parts of Latin America.
  • WHO has taken the step by contacting countries around the world and asking them to increase the number of nurses they graduate by an average of 8 percent each year.
