Coronavirus - What is it? How to prevent it? Is it covered under your Health Insurance policy?

Lately, the world has witnessed and experienced numerous virus outbreaks such as Zika, Mers, Ebola, Nipah and the most recently Corona. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a wide group of viruses that hampers the immunity of the human body and causes diseases ranging from the common cold, cough, headache and fever to severe disorders such as Mers-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Of late, a new strain of the same virus, called Novel Coronavirus has been found in humans which previously was unidentified.

The diseases spread by the latest outbreak of the virus are recognized as COVID-19, which has led to destruction among humans and is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov 2). The most common symptoms include shortness of breath, dry cough, fever, fatigue and in more severe cases the infection can develop to pneumonia and multi-organ failure.

Preventive Measures to Take Against Coronavirus

Since scientists have not yet come up with vaccines to prevent COVID-19, it is best to take the necessary preventive measures to avoid contracting the virus.

 1. Wash hands frequently

Make cleaning and washing your hands a frequent practice. Either clean hands using alcohol-based sanitizers or wash them with soap and water to kill the bacteria and viruses that might be on your hands.

 2. Maintain a distance from the people who are sick

Avoid close contact with someone who is coughing or sneezing, or have a fever or showing other flu-like symptoms. Pay special attention when you are in public places or while you are traveling using public transport.

 3. Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth.

You touch many things and surfaces unconsciously that may have viruses and other microorganisms. The contaminated hands can transfer the microbes to your nose, eyes, and mouth, which can enter the body and cause serious illness.

4. Follow good respiratory hygiene

You and the people around you must be practicing good respiratory hygiene, such as covering the mouth and nose while sneezing and coughing.

5. Seek Medical Help If Required

If you have fever, cough or you are suffering from the shortening of breath, seek medical care immediately.

6. Stay Updated & Follow the Advice Issued by Health Care Authorities

Stay updated about the recent information about COVID-19 and practice the instructions given by the local public healthcare authority.
