Car Problems In Winter and its Solutions

Winter is harsh – it's tough on our bodies, our minds and pretty much anything exposed to the elements, including our vehicles. This season of freezing temperature can cause havoc to your car. If you don't prepare yourself and your vehicle to tackle the impacts of the weather, you may have to face some pretty severe consequences. Prepping for winter doesn't have to cost a fortune, but it can definitely save a wealth of trouble and inconvenience. Here's a list of few things you can take care of to avoid some of the common winter-related car problems-

Battery-

Older car batteries can be a real problem on the coldest of mornings. You can say that it's one of the most common winter car problems.  Actually, the temperature below freezing point places a strain on a battery that is older. It is advisable that you get your battery's capacity checked when it is three to 4 years old. Batteries older than that should be replaced as it will undoubtedly create problems while starting the car.

Antifreeze-

Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is extremely important to your car, as it keeps the engine from freezing in cold temperatures. It has the proper pH balance that protects the motor against corrosion. Before you step into winter, make sure your car isn't running low on coolant. Also, ensure that there aren't any leaks in your car's engine that could cause coolant to drain out. Mix water and coolant in the right proportion before adding it to the radiator. Too much water mixed with antifreeze will put you at risk for cracking the engine block.

Tyres–

Fluctuating temperatures can cause changes in your tyre pressure. This can lead to tyre damage, reduced driving control, and poorer gas mileage. Check your user's manual for your vehicle's recommended tyre pressure, and measure your tyres frequently to make sure they match it. It's a good idea to have a set of spare tires specifically for winter driving. This will provide you with increased safety on slick roadways. You should change your tyres between summer and winter to ensure that the summer tyres offer decent mileage and last longer. Also, make sure that the tyre tread has an optimum grip, so you don't have to untoward situations.

Wiper Blades and Windshield Wiper Fluid –

When it snows for the first time, go out and put on those new wiper blades. They will help you stay safe during an unexpected ice storm or when a heavy vehicle passes you and splashes 5 inches of mud and cinders on your windshield. All the more, snow and ice can freeze on the wiper and windshield, thereby making it hard to see the road. Lastly, make sure that you have enough windshield washer fluid, and also you carry an extra bottle of liquid in case of emergency.

Gasoline –

Avoid driving your car with a near-empty gas tank during the wintertime. Lesser fuel in the tank can lead the water content and moisture in the air to freeze and create ice in the fuel lines. It is advised to have at least half a tank of gas.

Giving your car special attention in the winter season is essential. Avoid these winter car problems and get your vehicle ready for the cold season. Preparation and maintenance will save you a lot of money over time. It goes without saying that you should secure your car with a comprehensive car insurance policy in order to have peace of mind. A car insurance policy will offer Roadside Assistance and easy access to network garages so that you don't have to pay hefty bills in your car's maintenance.
